The National Collegiate Athletic Association has decided to penalize 81 teams for falling short on academic standards. The teams will face scholarship cuts this year and may be subject to more penalties next year.

San Jose State, University of Hawaii, Middle Tennessee State, Western Michigan, and San Jose State are some of the schools that have received sanctions this year.

The NCAA’s academic reform program evaluates 6,110 teams on their eligibility, retention, and graduation rates. Teams that have an APR below 925 and have at least one player fail out can lose up to 10 percent of their scholarships. About 44 % of men’s basketball team, 40% of the football teams and 35% percent of baseball teams would have a faced a cut in scholarships due to the APR requirement.

“Overall, academic reform is tough, but fair,” NCAA President Myles Brand said on a conference call. “Our objective is not to sanction, but change behaviors.”

The N.C.A.A. announced that 63 teams would be subject to immediate penalties, 31 received public notice letters that they would be subject to more penalties next year, and 18 would be subject to both. Teams receiving warning letters would need to improve immediately or could face serious penalties.

Some college teams in the south that were affected by Hurricane Katrina have received waivers and have not been subject to immediate penalties.

Teams that don’t meet academic requirements for three straight years may face a ban on postseason appearances and four straight years of poor academic performance would result in restricted membership for a school’s entire athletic department.
